Marked: A House of Night Novel by P.C. Cast & Kristin Cast
Marked is not a beacon of originality or clever characterizations. There are elements of other vampire novels sprinkled throughout its pages. The ancient gods and goddesses as vampires is reminiscent of Rice's famed Vampire Chronicles, and the religious aspects highlighted by the humans' intolerant People of Faith denomination brings to mind Harris' Sookie Stackhouse Series. In addition, the typical teenage cliches are present: the over-emphasis on beauty and how its intricately linked with personality and popularity, the heroine's Mary-Sue qualities, and the separation between teenagers and adults. Despite all of this, though, Marked does still manage to entertain thanks to its fast moving pace and realistic conversational tone. True, the Casts' vampires lack fangs, both literally and figuratively, but the novel has enough bite to keep its audience reading the series.
